National Young Writers’ Month – Day 1 – Horror Haiku

Howdy, all,

Well, here’s my first contribution to the seemingly impossible task I have set myself for this month. I have no doubt that it’s attainable, but it’ll take a lot of dedication and ideas. So, without further ado, here’s my first attempt!

Horror Haiku

She lit the fire
winter’s chill was overcome
on the couch she read

He watched from outside
the blade shone in the moonlight
he waited some more

The book was a bore
of loves lost and won in war
she lets out a yawn

His breath is vapour
the night is still and silent
almost time, he thinks

Earl grey tea, she thinks
loudly the fire crackles
the kettle is on

Cutting the phone line
ensuring no help at hand
the door? No… too bold

One sugar and milk
the window – rat-a-tat-tat
where’s that bloody cat?

Warm tea pleases her
walking to… RAT-A-TAT-TAT
mug shatters, tea spills

Is anyone there?
hiding in plain sight, watching
toward the window

Is… RAT-A-TAT-TAT
shrieking, she runs to the phone
monotonous tone

Hunter scopes his prey
his Danse Macabre now begun
rattles the doorknob

Trapped now, she panics
air is cold, his blood red hot
each step now crucial

He circles the house
slowly, slowly – savour this
entry found – back door

He holds the doorknob
and gently begins to turn
the creak is not heard

Tiptoeing slowly
he arrives at the kitchen
she has no idea

Pacing back and forth
what the fuck is going on?
her heart is pounding

He’s holding his breath
slowly creeping toward her
his prey within reach

A hand cusps her mouth
she lets out a muffled shriek
and starts to struggle

Her pupils dilate
as cold steel punctures her skin
her blood rushes warm

Her body goes cold
feeling warm breath on her neck
she falls to the ground

Tries to crawl away
with air escaping her lungs
blood stains on the floor

Adrenaline spikes
stab stab stab stab stab stab STAB
nothing… silence… death

So, thoughts? Impressions? Feedback? Anything? If you hated it, tell me why. If you loved it, tell me why.

And if you have any ideas for future mashups you’d like to see, let me know!

I’ve never really dealt with poems or haiku before (unless you count the entry titles for Paul versus Godzilla) and I have to say I had difficulty writing this – not only in terms of writing style, but content. Anyone who has read any of this blog will find it quite a departure from what they’re used to! Enjoy!

  1. Wowowow! What suspense! Awesome tactic flicking between the two perspectives. Stanzas 4 and 5 are my favourite.

  2. Well done on day one and on a very decent story with a very difficult style!

    Minor criticism…ado, not adieu. 😛
